The Writer's Breath

The body does the living, the body does the writing

The Writer’s Breath is a practice I introduced in my wellbeing-through-writing programs in 2014.

Brave new writers have been asking me for years to record this practice - and here it is.

When I first introduced this practice I thought people would think it was stupid. I was deeply self conscious about starting my workshops and program sessions this way.

However I stuck with it. Why? I noticed this practice is the difference between participants starting sessions all chatty and busy-minded, and straight-up focussing on their writing and listening to others in the session (which was the reason I included it in the first place).

And then, as a result of participant feedback, I learned this:

  • participants want The Writer’s Breath

  • writers who overcome writing obstacles, and those who go on to publish their books and blogs, practice The Writer’s Breath.

Writing is not the task of the mind.

Writing a report is the work of the mind. So is writing a shopping list.

Writing what matters is the work of the body. The body does the living. The body does the writing.

The Writer’s Breath draws us into the body, and from there positions us to open the channel to what I have come to call ‘the deeper well’. This well is our source for all the words we long to write.

It is here you will find the words that align with who you know yourself to be in the world.

It is here, in the whispers from the deeper well, you find self-aligned language for your living - and the words you long to land on the page.
